Policy Update-Week of Jan 12

posted on

In the Health Reform Update for the past week, the U.S. Supreme Court declines to hear another legal challenge to the Affordable Care Act (ACA).  A Congressional rule change threatens to cut federal disability payments by 20 percent, while the Senate investigates why two non-profit cooperatives created with ACA loans have already been forced to halt enrollment.

ACA Marketplace enrollment continues on pace to meet 2015 targets.  However, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator surprisingly resigns after 2014 tallies were found to improperly include dental plans.

Studies by The Commonwealth Fund find that medical debt has declined for the first time in a decade, thanks largely to coverage gains in Medicaid expansion states.  However, Medicaid expansion initiatives appear to be stalled in opt-out states like Idaho, Tennessee, and Texas.
