Health Reform Update - April 7th

posted on

In the Health Reform Update for the past week, more than 7.5 million consumers have now selected private coverage in the health insurance Marketplaces created by the Affordable Care Act (ACA) as those granted extensions past March 31st continue to enroll.

President Obama names the current Office of Management and Budget Director Sylvia Mathews Burrell to replace Department of Health and Human Service (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius who resigned after being largely blamed by Republican lawmakers for the flawed rollout of the Marketplace web portal last fall.  Pressure from vulnerable Democrats also forces HHS to backtrack on scheduled cuts in payment growth for Medicare Advantage plans.

In state news, Nevada faces a class-action lawsuit over Marketplace glitches that kept paid subscribers from being enrolled, while Democratic governors in Missouri, Montana, and Virginia continue to be stymied by Republican legislatures in their efforts to expand Medicaid.
