Cost Sharing for Sickle Cell Patients

(Midlothian, VA – March 13, 2020) – After the efforts of Patient Services, Inc. (PSI), the Virginia Legislature voted in favor of a $500,000 sickle cell disease patient assistance program on Friday. The Virginia Department of Health will administer the program, which provides health insurance premium assistance and cost sharing assistance for sickle cell disease patients who do not qualify for Medicaid.

“PSI is very excited to work with leaders in the legislature such as Sen. Spruill and Delegate Adams to create a program to ensure families with sickle cell disease have access to coverage and the treatments they deserve,” said Jim Romano, director of government relations at PSI.

PSI will work with the Virginia Department of Health in providing cost sharing assistance to sickle cell disease patients. Out of the general fund, $250,000 will be provided the first year and $250,000 will be provided the second year to establish this program.

Sen. Lionell Spruill and Delegate Dawn Adams both played crucial roles in inserting this budget amendment and establishing the sickle cell disease patient assistance program. PSI looks forward to working the Virginia Department of Health to make this program a success by helping families obtain the new treatments and therapies to treat this long-ignored disorder.

“The sickle cell community in Virginia has been marginalized for far too long,” said Nathan Thomson, government relations and advocacy associate at PSI. “I would like to commend Sen. Spruill and Delegate Adams for taking the lead on this critical issue and working for the benefit of patients. While the establishment of the program represents a win, we believe there is a long way to go in the battle for patient access. PSI will continue to work for the benefit of sickle cell community and the chronic disease community at large.”
