Current CEO Art Wood to retire July 3, 2020
Midlothian, VA –The board of directors of Patient Services, Inc. is pleased to announce the appointment of Gwen Cooper as the organization’s new chief executive officer effective June 1, 2020. Cooper brings over 20 years of executive nonprofit experience in all facets of healthcare, from leading statewide voluntary health organization fundraising and advocacy platforms to serving as an executive in provider delivery systems.
Her expertise in federal and state policy making, marketing, business and fund development have resulted in the procurement of millions of dollars for the creation of multiple patient focused programs in several states. “The common thread throughout my career has been improving access to care and maximizing opportunities for public and private payer program development that addresses the need for good healthcare across the entire patient continuum,” Cooper said. “PSI epitomizes patient-centered care by providing financial assistance to patients to ensure they get the life sustaining treatments that they need to live their best lives. It’s an honor to have been chosen to lead the next chapter in PSI’s history.”
The national search was conducted by Gallagher MSA Search, led by Rachel Meyer. Gallagher MSA Search specializes in nonprofit and healthcare CEO placements. “We were honored to partner with the Board of PSI to assist them in finding their next CEO,” Meyer said. “Gwen was selected from over 200 candidates we identified through an extensive executive search process. We look forward to following the progression of her career as the CEO of PSI.”
Acting PSI Board Chair Mitch Mula spoke on behalf of the Board: “I am truly excited to welcome Gwen Cooper to the PSI family. Our national search generated many qualified candidates; however, it was Gwen who rose to the top. With her extensive nonprofit and executive experience along with her proven leadership skills, it was obvious to the Board that Gwen was the standout candidate to lead PSI into the future as our new CEO.”
Cooper holds a Master of Public Affairs & Nonprofit Management from Indiana University and a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications from University of South Florida. She has served on numerous civic and nonprofit boards throughout her career and is a Certified Fundraising Executive through CFRE International. Prior to joining PSI, Cooper was the chief external affairs officer for Hosparus Health, the 19th largest hospice & palliative care provider in the US headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky. Additional past positions include vice president of external affairs for Seven Counties Services also in Louisville and president & chief executive officer of Community Health Charities of Florida.
Current PSI CEO J. Arthur Wood took the helm when founder Dr. Dana Kuhn, retired in April 2018. Prior to becoming the CEO Art worked alongside Dr. Kuhn for more than 15 years, shaping the patient assistance programs across the United States. Art will be retiring on July 3rd and has appreciated the opportunity to serve patients over the course of his time at PSI. “I’m looking forward to more time with family, travel, and enjoying more flexibility in my schedule. Of course, I will continue to be available as needed to work with those who need help and guidance with patient access and advocacy”, said Wood.
