“Looking back through all the adversity and everything. I wouldn’t change a single moment of it because it is really truly defined who I am today.”
At age 9, Jordan Martin was diagnosed with hemophilia B, a rare bleeding disorder. But it would be due to a kidney bleed in his younger brother, that the diagnosis would come. Active in sports in hopes to grow up and be just like his father and older brother, the diagnosis would temporarily put the brakes on further pursuit of sports. But, if you knew Jordan, you would know one thing, and that he was not going to let his diagnosis define him.
What Is A Bleeding Disorder?
Bleeding disorders are a group of disorders that share the inability to form a proper blood clot. They are characterized by extended bleeding after injury, surgery, trauma or menstruation. Sometimes the bleeding is spontaneous, without a known or identifiable cause. Improper clotting can be caused by defects in blood components such as platelets and/or clotting proteins, also called clotting factors.
The body produces 13 clotting factors. If any of them are defective or deficient, blood clotting is affected; a mild, moderate or severe bleeding disorder can result. Resource: National Hemophilia Foundation
What Is Hemophilia B?
Hemophilia B, also called factor IX (FIX) deficiency or Christmas disease, is a genetic disorder caused by missing or defective factor IX, a clotting protein. Although it is passed down from parents to children, about 1/3 of cases are caused by a spontaneous mutation, a change in a gene.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, hemophilia occurs in approximately 1 in 5,000 live births. There are about 20,000 people with hemophilia in the US. All races and ethnic groups are affected. Hemophilia B is four times less common than hemophilia A. Resource: National Hemophilia Foundation
