What Restoring Hope And Health Looks Like

May 28, 2019 | Patient Blog

Since 1989, Patient Services Inc., has been restoring hope and health to rare disease patients. In looking back on these last 30 years, we are humbled at how far we’ve come in helping to lead patients to positive outcomes.

By providing financial support and guidance to qualified patients with specific, rare chronic diseases, PSI assistance programs help patients and their families rediscover a hope and health they never thought imaginable. Because, let’s face it, often times, beyond the diagnosis, lies in wait, the hard costs for treatment. In many cases, this can mean the difference between life and death.

Case in point, did you know that 60% of Americans are living with a chronic illness? Could you commit 21% of your income towards life-saving medications? Sadly, not many can. And that’s why for 30 years, we have been passionately committed to this calling. At PSI, it’s not just our job, it’s our passion.

It’s Not Just Our Job; It’s Our Passion.

PSI senior leadership and the Patient Services Board of Directors are dedicated to solving these very challenges that confront uninsured/underinsured Americans. Our leaders are a collection of individuals with expertise in a variety of healthcare related areas. To learn more about our leadership, click here.

Together, we are making a difference. We recently conducted an audit of just how far we have come. In this, here is but a snapshot of what PSI was able to accomplish in 2018 alone.

What Does Restoring Hope And Health Look Like, By The Numbers?

What does restoring hope and health look like? Here are 10 stats from 2019 that will help paint the picture of why we are so passionate about what we do:

  • PSI assisted with over 150 diagnoses
  • Received over 15,000 new applications for assistance
  • Assisted over 28,000 active patients
  • Assisted with over 185,000 claims
  • Over 274,000 minutes spent talking to patients, family members or providers
  • $71.8 million paid out in direct patient assistance
  • On average, a patient received financial support from PSI for 8 months totaling $4,896.00
  • 60% of Americans are living with a chronic illness. Could you afford to commit 21% of your income to live-saving treatment?
  • Reduced call volume by 18% while assisting the same number of patients in 2018 due to internal efficiencies.
  • Over 92% of total functional expenses were dedicated to direct patient support

Restoring Hope And Health, From One Patient

PSI is humbled to be able to come alongside so many people. But how do these numbers translate into restoring hope and health? Here is one letter we received from HAE patient, Cathy:

“Dear PSI, I learned about you when I finally got treatment for my rare disease, Hereditary

Angioedema. I have suffered with this illness all my life, I’m now 58. Before your help with copays and insurance premiums I had to file bankruptcy and it was looking like my future held the same need. But by some miracle I found your services. Today, your help assists me in covering the cost of my life sustaining meds and insurance premiums. I can’t imagine going without your help. I’d not have meds, spend more time in the hospital, wracking up high costs that I couldn’t pay. I know I’d be in bankruptcy again.”

How PSI Provides Peace Of Mind

Patient Services, Inc. aims to provide peace of mind to patients living with specific chronic illnesses by providing financial assistance to eligible persons. We do this by:

  • Assisting with Medicare Part D co-insurance
  • Providing travel assistance for transportation reimbursement
  • Providing assistance for nursing and ancillary services
  • Offering free legal representation for those applying for Social Security Disability
  • And more!

National Recognition Programs

At PSI, the recognition we aim for is that from the patients and families we get to serve each and every day. But, along the way, we have also been deeply humbled to receive national recognition for our efforts in seeking financial transparency as well as accountability.

Recently, PSI received its tenth consecutive 4-star Charity Navigator rating for sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency! Only one percent of the charities they rate have received at least eight consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that PSI outperforms most other charities in America. Additionally, PSI is considered a GuideStar Exchange Platinum Participant by GuideStar USA, Inc. This level demonstrates PSI’s deep commitment to nonprofit transparency and accountability.

PSI has worked hard to showcase our progress toward our mission, and our long-held belief in being transparent about our work, to our constituents. As a GuideStar Exchange Platinum Participant and top rated Charity Navigator member, we use each platform to share a wealth of up-to-date information about our work to our supporters, grant makers, individual donors, and the media.

We’re Just Getting Started

For PSI, it has been an incredible 30 years. We couldn’t do it without the help of so many amazing individuals. That said, we’re not resting on our laurels. At Patient Services Inc., we’re just getting started.
